How do I turn off the "X new messages" notification message?

I've searched and searched and tried various combinations of settings.  I only want to turn off the additional notification that displays the number of new messages.  The key issue is that on my watch, this is the only notification I see.  I don't see the additional notifications for the actual messages.

What magical, hidden setting do I need to tweak to turn off just the 'X new messages" notification and just have the notifications for the mesages themselves?

Just wanted to say I don't like this notification either.

Just tap on this notification and swipe down to expand the 'notification card'.
This behavior is related to Android himself, not AquaMail.

I was comparing the notification behaviour with a coworker to started using Aquamail a few days before me.  We ensured we are running the same version, then compared notification related settings line by line.  He does not see the "X new messages" or have the notifications grouped by Aquamail.  I do have both of those issues.  The only difference is that I have priority notifications enabled and configured.  If I turn off priority notifications, the notification grouping goes back to stock behaviour.

Is there a way to use priority notifications with standard notification grouping/behaviour?
