Back Button on Pixel 2 with Oreo

Hello, AM Community.  Long time user/lover of AM!
Just got my new Pixel 2 after a VERY LONG stint with Samsung Galaxies. 
Generally loving it, despite a few quirks here and there.
My biggest annoyance, though, is the back button now being on the left instead of the right.
In light of the location of the "reply" arrow in AM, I'm CONSTANTLY hitting reply instead of back when leaving a message. 
I trust that even this old dog will learn a new trick at some point in the future, though wondering if the location of the reply button can't be changed so that I con't have two left-facing arrows on top of each other in every message.  The UI Tuner will not allow me to swap the buttons.  Might have to root, though would prefer to continue testing stock before I do.

There is a customization setting for which buttons / icons are shown - app settings -> message view -> customize the buttons.

There is no no way to change the order though. Sorry.

I saw that and played with adding several more buttons just to move the arrow down a bit, but that proved more cumbersome.
It's going to be an ongoing battle of the left arrow buttons, then.  Hopefully a future fix.
