Inconsistent Behaviour of Back Button
« on: August 17, 2017, 12:15:52 am »
I'm finding that, quite often I'm quitting Aqua Mail by mistake, by hitting the back button, when I mean to go to a previous screen. I know that technically speaking, it's 'user error' but the problem/confusion is exacerbated by the inconsistency of back button behaviour. For example:

* if I'm in the Messages List view and click on a message to read it, then hit the back button, I return to the Message List view

However:

* If I've got the side menu open and click on Accounts to view the accounts list, then hit the back button, the app quits when I'd expect it to take me back to the side menu again.

I think it would be useful to change the behaviour so that it required two taps on the back button to quit the app. FX File Browser does this; popping up a notification advising/warning you that tapping the back button again will quit the app:

To change this unwanted behavior:
-> go to the App's main window (account list) -> Settings (three-dots button) -> Look and feel -> disable (uncheck) the option 'Back' to close from message list'

This should solve your problem.

In addition to that, I recommend to enable the option 'Long'back' to close the app'
-> it's just the next option below.

Thanks. I knew I'd seen an option referencing the Back button somewhere, but couldn't remember where it was.

As it turns out, I already have both those options set as you recommend. But the app still quits if I hit the Back button [even a short tap] from the accounts pane.

Tap Accounts from side menu:

Tapping back button from the Accounts window quits app, instead of  [expected behaviour] returning to previous screen with side menu:

This happens even with the recommended options in Settings:

BTW. The above scenario is not an exhaustive list. I've just hit the back button from a screen where I had an alert asking did I want to save or discard a draft and that also quit the app.  Again, it was only a short tap, not a long press. There's definitely some inconsistency sprinkled throughout the app, as to what the Back button is going to do, which makes it a bit of a guessing game.

I just tried, and in my case, a short "back" from the drawer->accounts went back where I was.
I wonder if what you are observing is a result of how taps are registered in your phone.
I might be wrong, but I vaguely remember that there is a setting somewhere in the system settings for how short/long a long tap is.

But as a first test, I would disable in Aquamail that second option, "long tap back to exit", and check if the unexpected behavior still persists.

@madra
Now I got it: You are talking about the 'Side menu' (= Navigation drawer) in the Smart Folder:

-> tapping on the first item "Accounts" will move you to the Account list view (= App's main window)... but in this window, the 'Navigation drawer' is not available. Therefore: a short 'back' (in the main window) will close the entire app: That's intentionally.

@StR: AfAIK you don't use the 'Smart Folder'  8)

No, I don't use Smart Folder... I've tried it from the "Accounts" per the OP's description (not looking at the screenshot carefully):
* If I've got the side menu open and click on Accounts to view the accounts list, then hit the back button, the app quits when I'd expect it to take me back to the side menu again.

Yes, that confused me too... first. But, I knew that there is no "Side menu" in the account list.

No, I understood that it was about the navigation drawer.
And there, you can tap on "Accounts". And that's what I tested.

Re: If I've got the side menu open and click on Accounts to view the accounts list

Going from a message list to the account list view is "going back" (same as using Back in a message list).

Re: then hit the back button

You are at the top level (there is no Back icon in the window title), so yes, this quits the app.

I guess you're expecting that going from a message list to the account list is "a step forward (deeper into the app)", but it's the exact opposite.
