How to make AquaMail Sync and receive emails from Gmail after VPN connection established?

Now, the only way to receive email after VPN has connected is manually.

The Gmail client receive emails immediately after VPN connection is made.

Please try app settings -> mail receiving -> sync based on events (if you scroll down).
