keep gmail messages viewable in aquamail's inbox

after i read a message in my gmail account on aquamail, on the next check it disappears from the inbox.  after i log in to gmail on the web, i see the message remains in gm's inbox. 

tried several settings in both am and gm to no avail.  gotta be missing one?

as i wrote, the inbox.  but now that i've checked again, it disappears from the smart folder as well.

android version is 5.1.  it's a moto e 2nd generation phone, about 1 year old.  i forget how to do a screen shot.  just picture the inbox/smart folder showing no mail as if it just checked an empty mail account.  however, like i stated earlier, when i log in to the gmail web site, the inbox shows the message.

once i read the message, it disappears from the inbox on the next mail check.  i bet $5 it's a setting.  until some wonderful user posts what that might be, i'll just use the gmail app that came with the phone and disable am's checking of my gm acct.  perhaps i'll even keep it that way.

Umm, if it disappears from the "regular" Inbox in Aqua Mail -- not only the smart folder -- then it does not seem like a setting...

And it just seems wrong.

How do you sort messages in that folder in Aqua Mail? The default is "by date / time", but let's say if you'd switched to "unread first" or "unread and starred first"...

Can you please check in Menu -> Sort (with the Inbox folder open in Aqua)?
