Possible bug with Le S3?
« on: November 18, 2016, 09:44:16 pm »
I have a ticket pending with LeEco on this, but thought I might inquire here too.   This phone runs a very customized version of Android 6.0.1.   After about 1 hour of resting, the phone will no longer receive email.   Even if I set the phone to manually poll the server, it does not seem to sync.   I have to manually open the app to get AM to sync.   I am using IMAP push and push seems to work fine for a while, then stops once the phone is left alone.

I think this phone could be ignoring my selection to "ignore battery optimization" but I am not sure.

This is the only 6.0.1 device I have, so I am not sure if this is OS related or something else.

I have read there also could be issue with IMAP push and doze on android 6+. but I have a Nexus 6 running Android 7 and it seems fine.

Any ideas?

Yep, I've had a report or two about this phone in the Russian section of the forum.

Same story every time, going by past experiences:

- a manufacturer decides to implement some sort of "battery optimization" (see: Huawei, Xiaomi)

- they know this will break apps, so they whitelist some of the most popular ones (Gmail, G+, Facebook...) so they're not affected

- all other apps that may be affected are broken by this change (made by the manufacturer)

- but hey,  the phone and it's so *thin*, so beautiful, and they already got your money, thank you Mr. Customer.

Hopefully their support can tell you how to access their "battery optimizer" somewhere in the phone's Settings and whitelist AquaMail there.

Having seen a bunch of similar cases here with various phones, - my bet would be that it is due to the optimization(s).
IIRC, in some phones people reported a combination of the optimization from Android, including Doze mode, and additionally from the manufacturer or otherwise custom ROM.

It sounds you probably have read this, but just in case:
FAQ: http://www.aqua-mail.com/?page_id=227
Question: "Persistent network errors or the app not checking mail (any phone, with specifics for Android 6+, MIUI, Huawei)"

The symptoms you are describing are consistent with these culprits. Yes, doze can stop IMAP Push.
Essentially what all these battery optimizations do is (1) disable the network or access to the network and (2) do not allow an app (Aquamail in this case) to run in the background. Or, obviously both.

So, try to find where else you can disable this optimization (include in the White list) for Aquamail.

Thanks for the response.   Yes, the phone does have a place to white list apps from battery optimization but it obviously is not working.   I will try to see if LeEco will look at this.   These phones are new to the US and they seem to be responsive to resolving issues.   They have already pushed out a new upgrade since the phone was released.   Hopefully they will be open to resolving some bugs, if not.....lesson learned.

Thanks for posting the followup here.
Well, it sounds like that "is not a bug, but a feature".

What is weird is that this configuration option is available not through a menu, as it is done in other similar phones, but through the "magic sequence" (as it used to be in the pre-smart-phone era).

The best recipe to conserve the battery is to turn off the phone.  ;D

Second best: make sure no apps are able to run :)
