If you see this message in Aqua -- that comes from the mail server, Aqua just shows it.

Note that if your phone is behind a NAT (very common these days, with both WiFi and mobile) -- an IP based counter can count other people / phones that are NAT-ted via the same IP address.

I see this every once in a while with gmail when my laptop with a desktop client is turned on. Never with fastmail.
Its amazing how much gmail sucks and how well fastmal works.

Fastmail is amazing, yes.

I was even more impressed when I ran into some messages from one of its principals on a linux kernel mailing list (he found a real bug in the VM system).

And I was impressed even more when I submitted a bug report with Fastmail support (about a particular IMAP command) and got a response from him, a very unusual experience.

They are working hard on expanding their business, and I sincerely wish them all the best.

However, back to topic:

As far as I know, Gmail does not have a per-IP limit -- it's truly per account, and is enforced at login time.

There is a good chance that a desktop mail app is just too "greedy" about server connections -- enabling push for every folder it finds in the account (and since Gmail has quite a few predefined folder... well...)

Impressive.

I am guilty of enabling push on many labels. But, I also have about as many pushed folders in my Fastmail account and use the same client (eM) for both accounts. Fastmail never ever choked (knock on wood). Gmail does it every once in a while (although seemingly less frequently as of late).
Anyways, I only use gmail because my work requires me to.
