Is there a way to select more than a screenful of messages at a time to delete them (eg select first and last) - I get masses of spam and need to sort by subject and delete whole blocks

Yes. The default is conservative for safety (mine from angry users )

Please see app settings under "message list"... change "Select All means:" from "visible messages" to "loaded messages".
