Setting Aquamail as default
« on: July 12, 2014, 01:23:26 pm »
I am test driving AquaMail and I am quite impressed. However, I have one nagging issue: I have not been able to set it as the default mail app and the stock android email app resists all efforts to steer the default away from it. All suggestions in previous threads seem to be impossible:
- I cannot uninstall the stock email app without losing my Exchange contacts and calendar sync.
- I cannot clear defaults either because according to its settings it is not set as default (but any email link still defaults to it).
- According to third-party app 'Default App Manager' the default is already set to AquaMail (but email links default to the stock app).

Using a Samsung S4, rooted with CyanogenMod.

Any suggestion how to deal with this? Thanks!

This is not something I really can help with, sorry.

Android has a general purpose "default app per intent" mechanism, Aqua doesn't do anything to get some sort of special treatment, and I've not heard about a third party "default app manager" until now...

You *should* be able to clear the defaults for the bulit-in Email app, and get prompted for mailto: links --- except I vaguely recall seeing some code in stock Email (stock Android code, I should mention) that handles clicks on mailto: links internally, not offering the choice of other apps.

So, clicking a mailto: on a web browser page, etc -- *should* show a prompt. Clicking a mailto: link in stock Email won't, and it's how stock Email is.

Thanks, Kostya, I appreciate that this is more a system issue than an issue with AquaMail; I just hoped that you (or someone else in this forum) would have come across it before. As you say, I should be able to clear the defaults -- except for some reason I cannot on my configuration. Hm, back to the drawing board, I guess... ;)

Default App Manager is quite a nifty app and comes highly recommended.

Thanks for your input!

Resurrecting this thread...

I've been using MailWise, because it's able to sync my outlook.com calendar and contacts, but in most respects I'd prefer to return to AquaMail. I can't disable the stock email app without getting error messages. But would an app like DAVdroid take care of it, and still allow AquaMail to do it's thing with calendar invites etc?

You should be able to remove your Exchange account from the "stock" app.

Aqua's calendar sync is completely self-contained.

It does not rely on any other app, only uses Android 4.0+'s ability for apps to plug into the device's calendar storage. This calendar storage is again is self-contained, does not depend on any apps that might sync there, or any apps for viewing events from this calendar storage.

For contacts, Aqua doesn't sync them with the system (and this won't change for some time), but Exchange contacts are available in the app itself (in its own contact picker -- buttons to the left of each recipient entry field).
