email not being moved to some folders

Hello. This morning I moved a bunch of Gmail Inbox emails to various folders using Aqua-mail on my Android tablet. In Aqua-mail, all these emails are happily living in the new locations. However, when using Gmail itself thru a browser or accessing the account via Thunderbird, some of those emails are still in the Inbox, while others *did* move to the folders. No amount of refreshing in Aqua-mail or restarting Aqua-mail on the Android tablet seems to update all those moves to Gmail itself. However, to repeat, some of the moves did work.

The folders all seem to have the same config options in Aqua-mail. If there is an RTFM ptr or forum discussion, I would appreciate the pointer to it since I have not been able to find an explanation myself.

Running AM 1.3.8 and Android 4.2.2.

I just saw the option of upgrading to Pro. I thought I had done this already since I like to pay for the SW I use. Would the upgrade make a difference?

Thanks for the quick reply.  There are over 10 builds dated April 2014 in that directory. As a software developer myself, can I ask for a recommendation for the most stable build :) to choose?

Ok, have installed 1.3.26.11. Is there a way to force the Aqua mail side and gmail side to synch? AM has certain emails in folders, but gmail has them still in the inbox. I have tried restarting AM to no effect.

Should I just recreate the AM acct?

I think it must be Gmail's idea of "labels" creating confusion.

Gmail doesn't have folders. It has labels. Each label is represented by an IMAP folder.

Moving a message between folders via IMAP (Aqua, Thunderbird, etc.) will remove the label that corresponds to the old folder, and add the new label that corresponds to the new folder.

Hi again and thanks for the quick responses.

I understand about the labels vs folders. The Inbox label was not replaced by the folder label, *some* of the time. After upgrading and recreating the acct, it worked perfectly for a bit, and then it started happening again, only sometimes! Some emails would get the new folder/label,  and the next one wouldn't. Then it would work again, and then stop. The worst kind of bug!

I tried finding some common thread (read/unread, certain folder names) but nothing yet. I will try again later to isolate the issue.

I tried isolating the problem and couldn't do it. Very occasionally, AM thinks it moved an email to a folder, but nothing happens in Gmail, and the email remains in the Inbox. Any thoughts on what I should do next?

Hi Paris,

Thank you for offering your help. I had a family emergency come up since I posted last so my time has not been my own. I will definitely try to gather all this info over the next few days. It is the least I can do since Aquamail provided months of great service for free. If we can get this sorted, I will certainly upgrade to the paid version.

Since my last post,  of course all has been working perfectly, until today when 1 email out of 10-12 didn't really get moved to the folder. It only seems to happen when I am moving lots of individual emails in a quick manner (one "move folder" command issued every few seconds). I saw a post in the forum about Gmail not accepting too many simultaneous connections.  Since I am moving many emails quickly as individual transactions,  could that be part of the problem?

Would enabling a Debug log be useful?

I am hesitant about Paris Geek's suggestions since I can't reproduce this issue at will.

Well, no, if you were moving messages one after another without leaving the app -- the connection limit won't come into play.

Were you moving them one by one? Or did you select all 10 or 12 at once?

I'd be interested to know if it happens again.

Thanks for the reply. I was basically stepping down the list of emails individually. I would open up an email, move it to a folder, then the next email would automatically open, and I'd move it to the same or different folder. Occasionally, I would mark an email "unread" and then I'd be sent out to the Inbox list. I'd then open up another email, and do more moves on a bunch of emails. I would say that I was moving a total of 15 emails, with a move command about every 5 seconds. Of those 15 emails, only 2 didn't really go into the folders (i.e. Aquamail showed them in the folder but Gmail showed them in the Inbox still.)

I have noticed that once the issue starts - i.e. the move works on Aquamail but Gmail doesn't show the move (i.e. email still in Inbox) - then I can get it to happen again easily if I start moving lots of emails around. However, if I then delete the acct in Aquamail and recreate it, this issue stops happening, even if I use the same bunch of emails. Last time, after I recreated the email acct, Aquamail took 3-4 weeks before this behavior happened again. Lots of folder moves worked perfectly. Then something changes somehow, and the issue starts happening here and there. The emails are new obviously but the folders are the same ones that had been around the whole time.

@aromweis -- thank you for the detailed response.

How much time passes between moving messages in Aqua and your checking gmail / web and seeing that the messages did not move?

I mean, have you tried refreshing the entire account (using the refresh icon in the main window) or just waiting for the next scheduled mail sync, to see if Aqua pushes the changes to the server?

Since, as you described, the issue is likely to repeat once it starts, could you try capturing it in a debug log, as described in my signature? You won't need to keep logging enabled for all of 3-4 weeks, just enabling it when the issue happens initially would be fine.

Sorry for the delay in response - end of school year is a busy time here. When I first notice this happening, at least a few hours have passed between moving the mail in Aqua and then using Gmail, since I do most of my email processing on my Android tablet.

I rarely use the account refresh in the main Aqua window and so rely on the next regular mail sync to keep everything up to date. I don't think I have ever tried to use the main refresh when this issue happens.

I actually do already have a debug log, from a few weeks ago. I have to admit that the situation details are a bit hazy now, but I think I moved my test emails back into the Inbox using Gmail, did an Aqua Inbox refresh using the icon at the top of the Inbox screen, then turned Aqua debugging on, and tried moving them again to folders using Aqua. Then, Aqua would show the test emails in their new folders, but Gmail showed 2 still in the Inbox. I definitely remember one of these emails and still have it. After I turned Aqua debug off, I deleted and recreated the account.

Since that account recreation, all has been working fine again (about 1.5 weeks).

If I have not explained something clearly enough, please let me know. I can upload/send the debug log where ever necessary and send along a copy of that email  mentioned above.

I updated to 1.3.28 as directed by Kostya and I have not been able to reproduce the issue so far. If it happens again,  I will post again. Thanks for the super product support!
