Delete, return, forward icons have disappeared

Using hotmail(outlook). I must have accidently changed a setting but when I open a message I do no have the option to delete, reply or forward it. Can someone give me a hint as to put me back on track again?

Sounds like you've enabled full screen mode (which sticks from viewing one message to the next).

There should be a semi-transparent button to toggle out, in the lower-left corner... Or use Menu -> View -> Disable full screen.
