This particular mail app, being targeted at mobile devices, with limited -- connection speed, data transfer budget, data storage performance and budget -- is built around syncing a limited number of recent messages.
A mobile device is nothing like a desktop computer, where "just 100mb more" makes no difference, nobody will even notice.
If you'd set your "messages per page" very high, well, just scanning all those messages for changes can take some time.
