Outlook invites -> Calendar
« on: October 15, 2013, 03:04:51 pm »
Hi,
when I open an Outlook invite, AquaMail asks me to add this "event" to the calendar.
But the default selected calendar is a "Google Calendar" (on the cloud).
I can select manually other calendars, like "My Calendar".
For the invite, can I set the default calendar the "My Calendar" (the local android calendar) ?

Thank you,
Salvo

Recent development builds (see this forum's respective section) remember which system calendar you used last and then offer it as the default selection.

Hi,
I found this old thread from 2013 which seems very related to what I'm seeing. AquaMail (1.5.9.14) now always selects my Tripit calendar by default when I want to reply to event invitations. I have never selected that calendar for any event invitation. It may therefore look like the functionality described above has failed? I'm certain that this worked earlier, but unfortunately, I cannot be more exact as to when it started choosing the Tripit calendar instead of whatever I used last.

Re: always selects my Tripit calendar

Is this calendar linked to a particular email-like account / id?

If so, does it match the email of the account in AquaMail, under which you're receiving the invite?

Not sure about linking, but I think the tripit calendar is the only calendar in the list showing email address event invitations are sent to. I'm using Google calendar but not Gmail.

Re: I think the tripit calendar is the only calendar in the list showing email address event invitations are sent to

Um, sorry, not sure I got that.

What I was trying to say:

If *a* system calendar is "under" what looks like an email account (the calendar's identifier) -- and this matches the account's own email in AquaMail -- then the "event details" dialog will select this calendar by default.

This has priority over "last used calendar".

So if your account in AquaMail is foo@bar.com, and the calendar app identifies its calendar also as foo@bar.com (and there are also bzz@gmail.com, abc@def.com calendars) --> the the foo@bar.com calendar is the one that'll be selected in the dialog.

I think your description is correct.

The list of calendars in the event details dialog contains various calendars, each with a name (often my name) and an email address in square brackets. The calendar that is always chosen is the one that contains my primary email address.

This is not the calendar I use, it is a calendar created by some app. I use Google for calendars, but I do not use Google as my email provider.

"This is not the calendar I use, it is a calendar created by some app"

Do you need this calendar at all then? Maybe you can just delete this particular calendar, if you don't use it?

I do indeed need it. It is my travel planner app (Tripit).

Ok, so what are we going to do?

Would you agree that matching a system calendar on the account's email (under which the invite was received in) makes sense, maybe not for your specific setup, but in general?

Kostya,

I don't have any stake in this situation, as so far I am lucky not to be forced to use outpook [sic!]. (But that might change at some point.)
But I was curious about this case, and I was trying to evaluate this situation. I perfectly understand the logic you have behind the app's behavior.
However, I think, both the ability to choose a different calendar (which is implemented) and the ability to choose a different default/preferred (or least to have the last one used as the preferred) calendar is important. And if I understood the situation correctly, in case of the matching calendar-e-mail account, it is the dead preference.

I do use multiple google calendars most of which are under one account, and I also have multiple google e-mails (for different functions). And I would want most events to go to my "main" calendar, that is  "non-matching".

So, I'd suggest that the logic covering what should be the default account is fine, but in addition to that, there should be an option to override that.

Yeah, it makes sense.

I think an per email account option called "default calendar for invites" would work. Default selected is "automatic", which is the current feature.

Ugh. More and more settings is not always the best way to solve an issue.

I agree. The settings screens are rather big already. Don't know about the design, but an option could be to have a checkbox when replying saying "make this default for this account"

Or - maybe that is the solution: just use whatever the user selected the previous time for that email account? Simple, intuitive and not another setting. I'd assume that people normally stick to one calendar for each or all email accounts.
