Do not Delete mail on Server
« on: June 28, 2013, 10:36:27 am »
Simple really... But I can't find the setting(s), if there is/are any.

A setting to configure AquaMail to NEVER EVER delete mail after it has downloaded from the mail server.

By that I mean any circumstances what-so-ever... Even if the Deleted folder is emptied, even if the Universe is ending, it must never Delete Server side.

Could someone point me at the settings if there are any?

Thanks
Arturox

The previous app I was using had a specific POP3 setting for this action "Delete email from server"   "Never"

For POP3:
Long click on the account name -> Options and folders -> Account options -> Deleting messages -> "Hide in the app, keep on server"

Ah I see... I'd been there but the  "Hide in the app..." bit had me confused so I'd not set it.

I've now set it and Aqua doesn't Delete my mail on the server, excellent.

However, I don't want the downloaded email to Hide in the app, I just want it to act normal.

Why should these two setting be combined; Setting a  Do not delete on Server is an important setting.

Hide in app, what the (rude word) is that about?

So I don't want emails hidden, and I don't want mails on the Server deleted, how do I get that?

Thanks
Arturox.

Well it is perhaps a "bad" transalation from Russian to English.
I think it means that the emails get localy deleted and not hidden.
Lets wait for Kostya the developer to make sure it is as i think.

Mmnnn!
Before I changed the setting, I download a couple of emails, read them, didn't want to keep them locally, hilighted and was able to delete them via the waste bin icon.

Change the setting to...  "Hide in the app, keep on server" and there's now no Menu option or waste bin icon to delete the local mail.

How is one now supposed to delete local unwanted postings?

Instead of the waste paper basket you have with this option enabled at the left an icon "Eye with an X on top"
Also now an menu entry in the email inbox view "Show hidden". This means that the local emails will not be deleted but only hidden, which i personal like.

Meaning the feature you are seeking for is for now not available.

Please make an entry in the "Feature wish" part of the forum.

Interesting...
Say, I have a list of mails, now all read, I don't want to keep 'em, where do  I find a menu "Select All"?  because I can't find one, and as these things don't have keyboards as such, the universal Ctrl + A is not available...

I see I can progress through the whole list with a slow press on each one to hilight it... Yea I'm going to do that every time.

I am aware that if I manually select one mail then a menu option suddenly becomes available to Select List.

Not what is required, just a consistent menu option to Select All whatever the state of the action.

Thanks
Dave

The "select all"  button is the right icon. a square with four dots in it. It selects all visible messages on your screen. You can change this behavior to "loaded Messages" in:

Main menu -> Settings -> Message List -> Select "Al" means

  ::)
So it does, and I thought it just made the bottom menu hide.   ;)

I've only recently started using Aqua mail after using other apps.

With regard to changing the behaviour...
"Main menu -> Settings -> Message List -> Select "Al" means"

Obviously I've got a "Main menu -> Settings -> Message List" containing 12 options but I can't see anything that matches the last bit.   ... -> Select "Al" means
?

Thanks for the help, appreciated.

Do not have my handy with me (charging) , but it should be at the end of the Message list settings. Will check later.

Whoops! silly me, it is the last item in the list, but it's below the bottom of the screen.
I'd given the screen a quick flick/wipe before to see if there was anymore but it hadn't scrolled, so I assumed that was it for the menu list.

I've just given the screen a flick/wipe in a different place and it's now scrolled that extra entry into view.

Thanks
Arturox

for me the same problem, I'm using aquamail as daily mail reader, when email is read I delete it but want to save all my e-mails on server side. So to do this aquamail mus be set up to hide read e-mail in application othervise when deleted in app will be deleted from server.
But after couples month of use aquamail become to start very very slow due to this huge database of hidden e-mails. So maybe developer could implement option to remove this hidden e-mails while not deleting it from server???
I see that there is option "remove locally trash" but this not work loccally but also synchronise trash with server.

Re: performance.

The database of hidden messages is trimmed over time (unlike K-9 and stock Email where it's allowed to grow forever, AFAIK).

Please try using Menu / Compact message store (in account list mode) to optimize the database. Some (not all) devices need this.

And to reiterate:

In order to "delete" messages from the app, and keep them on the server, *something* has to be stored locally. There is no way around it, otherwise, next mail check will bring all those messages back.

Any mail app does this, the only difference is what / how much is stored. I've chosen to keep hidden messages on the device (subject to the same "keep 250 per folder, delete the rest" rule that is used for all on-device message store), so they can be restored (shown) if needed.

I am a new user trying to learn the settings. I too am confused with the "hide but don't delete".

Are you saying that (in pop accounts) if I choose the hide option :
1. The deleted email is never deleted on the server
2. It remains on the device but *does not accumulate beyond a certain size because it is automatically deleted from the device after a certain point*?

If so, what is the maximum size before the accumulated trash is deleted? Can I set the size?

Is it necessary to manually compact for the accumulated trash to be deleted?

Is it possible to see the "hidden" messages and maybe to restore them?

Thank you.

1 - yes
2 - yes

Beware that changing the account's default delete method from "move to deleted" to "hide" will not change the destiny of those messages already moved into Deleted.

http://www.aqua-mail.com/forum/index.php?topic=1439.msg4475#msg4475

Yes, it accumulates messages to a certain point. K-9 does too, and gets slower over time on some devices.

Some devices benefit from "Menu / Compact the database" from time to time, but it's not specific to hiding messages. On these devices, the app's data storage gets slower over time - on most others, it does not (same Android everywhere, I'm not secretly using Windows Phone 8...)

It is possible to restore hidden messages -- Menu / Show hidden in message list mode. Something I've not seen possible in other mail apps, Thunderbird even.

@dirk - I'm open to better wording... "Hide in the app, keep on the server" seems pretty descriptive to me, that's exactly what it does... On the other hand, if you, or anyone else has a suggestion, feel free to let me know (Eng. Lit. degree, anyone?).
