What is the icon in Smart Folder that...

is a square with dots around it?? In between the search icon and the three dots.

Third from the left on a Samsung 7" tablet.

I click on it an nothing happens.

Am I missing something important?

Great app. Moved to you from K9 - which is gradually becoming defunct IMHO.

This icon means "Select all".

You will get a brief description by long pressing on the icon.
