Default account for sending
« on: November 15, 2017, 07:29:10 pm »
I have 2 email addresses that  I receive email to. However when I send emails I always want them to be from just one of these addresses for which I have created an identity.
when I reply to an email sent to the address that I matches the identity, there is no problem, but when I reply to an email sent to the other address, the from address shows as the account address which I never use.
Is there a way to force it to use the identity that I want? I have set Default Account in Composing and Sending, but this doesn't solve the problem.

Hi,

Unfortunately at the moment Aqua Mail does not support this feature. I will file it in our database and it will be supported in the near future.
For now you will need to use the "account / identity drop-down" in the action bar on the compose screen to switch the address.

And could you also please clarify - would it be fair to say that you don't want to send "from" the account at all? Only "from" the identity?

Thanks for the replies.
That is correct, I never want to send from the account, only from the identities.

OK. I _think_ we should be able to add a special case - 1) the account having no outgoing server and 2) the identity having its own.

Just to clarify, I never want to send from the account username email. However the identities that I have do use the SMTP server for that account when sending.

Understood.

- "real" account has no outgoing server
- identities do

The current version won't even let you compose a message with a setup like this - it won't "understand" that the identities with their own SMTP server settings are perfectly capable of sending mail without an SMTP server in their account.

The "fix" will be to make this possible.

Has this progressed any?  I just bought the full version of Aqua Mail, and am running into this problem as well.  Just to give some background, I use Fastmail.  One feature I use is that my Fastmail account name, e.g. MyFastMail@fastmail.com, is known ONLY to me, all my emails are sent out and received using aliases (what Aqua Mail calls an identity), either one like MyPublicName@Fastmail.com or one with my own personal domain which also gets mapped to Fastmail, Me@Lastname.com.  It's a security feature.  So even people who email me don't know my actual account name at Fastmail.  And I'd like to keep it that way.  But the default when composing a new mail in Aqua Mail is to use the "log in" account identity, which is the one that no one else should ever know.  So I'd like to the default to be one of the identities I set up in Aqua Mail.  Hope this is something that'll be coming out soon, otherwise I'll have to make sure I remember to change the identity every time I compose a new message.  Thanks!

After your reply I dug around the settings more.  Found it!  I'm still learning the app, and wow, you've got quite a menu system there!  :-)  Thanks.

I'd like to use this feature, but I haven't yet found where to set an identify
as the default for outgoing mail.

Could anyone tell where exactly to find this setting, or direct me to the
topic in the FAQ?

Settings, Composing and Sending, at the top of that page.
