Impossible to scroll long messages on phones
« on: October 11, 2014, 04:53:56 pm »
Kostya,

When I have a long e-mail message, - I see something that looks like a scroll bar on the right. However, on my phone (xt-907 aka Droid Razr M), I cannot use it to scroll the message.
I am not sure if it because it is very tiny (and/or too close to the edge of the virtually frameless screen), or because it is not a scroll bar but a scroll indicator.
I see that in contrast, the list of messages has a knob on the scroll bar that is very convenient to use for scrolling. I wonder if the lack of such an knob in the message viewing window is an oversight that can be easily fixed.

While we are on this topic, I would also suggest implementing a "quick scroll/jump" to the very bottom as it is done in Opera: If you start scrolling down, an image of an down-arrow appears; if you touch it, it jumps to the very bottom of the page. This would be convenient for very long messages.

It's not necessary to use the scroll bar there -- scrolling by swiping works just fine.

Kostya,
I may not have written it well, but the key word is long messages. E.g. 100—200 kB of text.
Swiping is possible but after some 20-30 times in a row, it can lead to a repetitive stress type of injury. Just try it and you will understand.

You are not talking about *long* messages, but *too-long-to-be-handled-on-a-device-screen* messages. AquaMail is an email app after all.

 :)

... but the *too-long-to-be-handled-on-a-device-screen* messages could be an issue for the upcoming 'specific conversation mode' in AquaMail's scheduled version 1.7

For this a "quick scroll/jump down-arrow" to the very bottom of the conversation view and/or a "scroll bar" could be a useful solution.

Paris Geek,
I agree that it's not *really* necessary at this time...  but 'maybe' with the upcoming 1.7 version.
... in the message view (with embedded replies !)

As described in your attachment here:

Paris Geek:
I hope that was a "tongue-in-cheek" comment.  :P
(Otherwise,  it would be joining the company of suggestions on how users should do things with their devices from MSFT and ADBE, in /dev/null.  ;)  )

Aquamail is perfectly suitable for what I am using it.
Here are a few use cases for the situation described:
1. Checking the summary at the bottom of a long message that contains automated script output from a server is a simple task that can be done on a phone. Depending on the day and events, those messages can range from 1 to almost 200 kB.
2. Finding information in the signature (e.g. for the phone number) at the bottom of a long chain of e-mail exchange is yet another simple function for which Aquamail and a smartphone are very suitable.
3. Occasionally, someone forwards a message with either the "To:" header with a long list of original recipients (some 100-200 people) and only a short message, or with a long chain of forwards, where some 22 forwarding headers are at the top of the message of the body.

In all those cases, ability to quickly jump to the bottom (and occasionally to the middle) of the message is convenient. Desktop mail applications have the button "End", and window-based programs typically have a scrollbar.

Now, whether Kostya considers this important enough (and easy enough) for him to correct/implement, - I'd leave it to him to decide. Seeing that he has a scroll-knob implemented in the list of messages, I am guessing that it would be relatively simple, but I might be totally wrong.

Fast (indexed) scrolling in the message list is completely different.

Messages with 100-200 recipients (and probably 100-200 lines of "Confidential communication" stuff at the bottom), ugh.

But as a developer, I see what you're saying. Think it should be possible on 4.4 and above.

--

A side note:

I've gotten a sample message that has 1.5 megabytes of HTML code, with 500 linked images, as a bug report...

Something that a certain company sends weekly as "this week's sale items" promotion.

Crashes WebView (yes, that thing again) in Android 4.4 -- in Aqua, stock EMail, K9, etc. Works fine on a much less powerful device with Android 4.2.

So messages much larger than 150K exist and get sent to hundreds of thousands of users, weekly...
