Contacts syncing
« on: December 28, 2016, 11:42:09 pm »
Kostya, after upgrading onto phone Android 6 I am having problem in getting my AquaMail Pro to read in the contacts stored both in the phone system and on my Google account.
What I get to see is just a weird selection of some 15 names out of totally 70plus. Repeated attempts at successful syncing return nothing on AquaMail as much as triplicated contact entries in the phone system. Where do I go wrong? I hasten to add that I reinstalled not only AquaMail repeatedly but did a complete Factory Reset to start from the scratch...in vain. Would you have a tip or two for me to resolve this to get my favourite apk back into smooth working condition? Thanks in advance.

Please check what's there in your Contacts (People) app and/or use Menu -> System contact picker on Aqua Mail's compose window.

If those are not the contacts you're looking for, then something's wrong there, not with Aqua Mail.

I had a couple of reports of missing contacts in Contacts, and then when the user checked his Google Contacts on the web:

https://www.google.com/contacts/

... he discovered that somehow his contacts lost their membership in "My Contacts" and therefore were not visible / accessible on Android. Nothing to do with Aqua Mail, and we'll never know why this happened.

Perhaps worth checking as well...

Thanks a bunch. Nothing in Gmail account under contacts to help me obviously. There are ONLY telephone contacts filed in the Android phone that are stored on Google. There also is a folder that reads AquaMail under Contacts which is where the problem comes from. It contains just about 1/3 of names that are seen in my Outlook address book. Over nearly 2 years of smooth use of AquaMail on Android 4.2.2 this is the first time that Outlook email contacts did not appear in the Aquamail contact section automately after the email account was added and activated in the device. I am somewhat suspicious of some new protective measure on Google´s or Microsoft´s part preventing 3-rd party apk such as Aquamail from reading Outlook.pst files. I am truly desperate having no idea of how to re-activate the perfect functioning of my Pro version. My last hope:  Any method there making it possible to copy Outlook contact file into Android device to be picked up by AquaMail other than adding each contact name manually, if at all possible??? Sorry about being difficult. Rgds

Re: Outlook email contacts

There is no such thing to Aqua Mail.

Mail apps don't talk to each other, don't know about each others' existence, and don't magically pull contacts from each other.

I assume you meant "Outlook the Windows app" here, BTW.

Re: preventing 3-rd party apk such as Aquamail from reading Outlook.pst files

It never did and probably never will "read Outlook .pst files".

For accounts set up as Exchange type, Aqua Mail can auto-complete and access email addresses from the server address book.

For other account types, Aqua Mail auto-completes from Android Contacts (People) "app". How they get their is mostly not its business.

And two cherries on top:

1 - Aqua Mail can also search a certain number of your actual recent messages (stored on the device) and offer email addresses from there, even if they're not stored anywhere.

App settings -> contacts -> recent addresses.

2 - Aqua Mail can collect and save addresses from the messages you send

App settings -> contacts -> auto-save

These addresses are saved into a separate group called AquaMail.

Thank you. I am wiser now. What confused me obviously: using previous devices running on Android 4.2..., all it took for me to see the usual collection of email contacts was to install AquaMail and perform the Exchange type of mail account settings. I assumed the apk pulls those from the server on which I have registered my email account and which, besides AquaMail on Android I access via MS Outlook. What is even more confusing, proceeding exactly the same way but on Android 6, all I get to see is just a part of the whole list. Seems rather these are what you mention as "recent addresses"although they could NOT be stored in the device which is brandnew and with ROM reinstalled to top it. The "selection" of email addresses must come from somewhere else which is what I had in mind when seeking some access path for editing etc. Checking out my Gmail contact section, I noticed one group marked AquaMail. I never figured out how to export these into the Android device for AquaMail to read in. Will keep experimenting or opt for one of the methods you reminded me of.

You will want to check phone Settings -> Accounts -> Google -> tap into your @gmail account -> make sure that "Sync Contacts" is enabled.

That's how the contacts you see on the web (on Google's web site) get to the Android device.

Second, on Exchange contacts specifically:

Aqua Mail does not *sync* those into Contacts (People), yet.

But those contacts should show in auto-completion and the app's own built-in contact picker on the Exchange tab.

But that's only for Exchange type accounts.
