name.com, Mail2World

As was recently discussed, this IMAP server has a bug in its "give me the list of unread messages" command -- preventing AquaMail from being able to sync mail there.

I've contacted name.com support, their response:

Quote
Thank you for contacting Name.com. I apologize for the delay in my response. We have escalated this this issue with Mail 2 World. They have advised a possible solution:

Can you please have the affected users try IP 209.67.128.102 instead of the hostname for the IMAP server that they currently are testing with?

If you could please reply with the outcome of this test. We could like to find a resolution if this does not work. I anxiously await your response.

So they're treating it as a bug, good.

To make this change:

New (in AquaMail) account:

- Enter your email and password, press Manual instead of Next

- Enter the IP address from above as the incoming server

- Change "security type" from SSL to None (yes, not good, I just contacted name.com support about this too).

Existing account:

- Long press the account in AquaMail

- Account setup

- Manual, then enter the IP address.

- Change "security type" from SSL to None

Name.com support created a test account for me, here are the results:

1 - The issue which was preventing incoming mail sync is fixed in their "new, not the current production server" at the IP address given above.

2 - The workaround in latest AquaMail from last night works fine with their "current production server" fine too.

That's as far as syncing incoming mail goes. Marking read / unread works, star / unstar works too.

In other areas, things are not so good.

Moving messages between folders (including to Deleted) "sort of" works, again, server issue.

Searching for messages by text is broken, server issue again, and I believe K9 Mail and Gmail would be affected too.

Uploading sent messages works, but then then get deleted from AquaMail and re-downloaded again on next mail sync (the server won't let the app locate the just uploaded message). Server issue too.

---

Properly implementing an IMAP server is a large, difficult task :)

The remaining server implementation issues above will be passed on to Mail2World (the server's software developer) by name.com support.

For the last month or so, I've been closely working with Mail2World, the developers of mail software behind name.com and others.

They resolved the original issue here ("search for unread messages") and a few other shortcomings in their IMAP implementation:

- Text search
- Uploading sent messages
- Moving messages between folders

Things have progressed a lot, I'm really impressed by how they took my feedback.

This will benefit all apps using IMAP (K9 Mail, Gmail app, Thunderbird, and more).

Obviously, I can't speak on when they're going to release these changes, under what version number, or when their customers (name.com and others) are going to upgrade.
