Intermittent IMAP message delivery
« on: September 24, 2015, 04:48:18 pm »
Dear Forum,

I am new to Aqua Mail but selected it after looking at 5 or 6 other Android email apps.  I like how configurable it is and I like its widget.    I am using a new LG Optimus II phone and the only app on the phone that I downloaded is Aqua Mail.  The phone has no mobile carrier service as I only plan to use it on WiFi to access a GMail account I set up for it to receive messages.  The phone is a LG-VS450PP running Android 4.4.2.

The set up works well, I can receive messages.  I set sound notifications to tell me when an email arrives.  I make sure that I have the following checked,  'Scheduled sync' , "When the app is active" , "IMAP push", "Enable notifications", "Notify when new messages", "Turn screen on".  I have also gone into system settings to battery management to make sure "Battery Saver" is turned off.

My problem is that when I first set up and test the phone.... I get my email messages and tone alert.  It is really fast!  Within 5-10 seconds of sending an email to the GMail address which lets me know that IMAP push is working.  The problem is that I then put my phone in my pocket, go about my day.... and find later that I am inconsistently notified of new messages.  Sometimes there was just no tone, but usually the message isn't showing in the Widget eventhough logging in to Gmail shows it there and unread.  What is interesting is that sometimes, all of a sudden several messages come through when a new one arrives.  Other times the messages come when I plug the phone into the charger.

Any help most appreciated :)  Although presently I am working with the free version, I would be happy to pay  for a solution of such a good app.

Greg

Do you think it is a notification-related problem, or receiving problem?
The subject of your posting speaks about delivery problem, but you describe only notification problems.
Do you have a situation when the message(s) had been received on the phone, but no notifications were shown?

In the mean time, you might want to check the settings related to synchronization and notifications:

Settings -> Mail, receiving:
1.  General -> System Settings -> Sync even when "Auto-Sync" is off
[Or make sure your "auto-sync" in the Android settings is on].
2.  Scheduled Sync -> Scheduled Sync is ON
[I might be wrong, but I thing even with Push enabled, this is fine to have.
And you said you checked it.]

3.  Scheduled Sync -> WiFi in sleep mode is ON

4. (optional) Check Mail on Events (WiFi connection)

Make sure that you didn't accidentally unchecked any of these in the Per-account settings (long push on the account in the account-list view mode, -> Account settings and folders)

5. Under "main" Settings -> Message notifications,
You might want to turn on "When the app is active".
I am thinking that if Aquamail is the only app that you are using, and you leave it in Aquamail, - it might consider the status of the App as "active", - even though intuitively I'd think it shouldn't be.

6. Also make sure that Push is enabled in the account settings, and for the Inbox.
(See FAQ item "How do I enable IMAP Push ?")

7. While reading FAQ, the next item "Notification icon in IMAP Push mode" might also be useful to you.

Thank you for the input and questions with answers thus far to your questions as follows:

1.  Sync when "Auto-Sync is off" is checked
2.  Scheduled Sync is on
3. WiFi in sleep mode IS NOT CHECKED.  WHAT DOES THIS ONE DO?  WOULD LOVE IF CHECKING THIS IS THE SOLUTION :)
4.  Check Mail on Events HAS NOTHING CHECKED.  I CHANGED THIS TO WIFI CONNECTION :)

>I am on WiFi hosted by Time Warner Business Class Cable
>I can confirm that my device is connected to the wireless access point since I can access the managed access point's software to see connected devices

Any other ideas I should try?  Otherwise I will test with the two changes #3 and #4 above and see if this fixes the problem.  My problem is mostly that the emails do not get delivered consistently to the deivce.  Occassionally, they are delived (i.e. in the Inbox) but I do not get a tone.

I see that my posting may have been confusing, so let me clarify:

(a) I also suggested checking the settings for 1-4 in the individual account settings - that you haven't changed them (as it is possible to make some setting for the specific account different from the overall settings).

(b) Check the settings listed in the items 5-6 (consider 7 as well) in the app Settings.

First day of testing with the "WiFi in sleep" turned on worked great on the device.  I will test for several more days.  If the solution is an ongoing one, how do I show my thanks to StR?  Happy to send a gift card or Venmo my thanks :)

@Gwatchma

If my suggestion worked for you, - that would be great.
You don't need to thank me in any monetary way. - I am just a happy user of Aquamail who is happy to help others.

Instead, - as Paris Geek has suggested (he beat me to it), - you can thank the developer of Aquamail by buying the Pro version and sharing the joy with others.

"WiFi in sleep mode"

This is intended for when you have "disconnect WiFi when the screen goes off" in the device's system settings.

The system will put WiFi to sleep (especially aggressive since Android 4.3 --  I assume your LG has 5.0 or newer).

The setting makes AquaMail "wake up" WiFi by "acquiring a WiFi lock", terminating this "sleep mode" in the Android WiFi subsystem.

I love to have the 'why'.  Thank you for the explanation.  Any way to support the developer without buying the pro version  (just don't need the pro version)?

Hi,  I recommend to buy the pro version. This app is worth every "cent",  even if you don't "need" the pro.

The Lite version
  • is limited to two accounts,
  • has no support for additional per-account identities and
  • adds a promo signature linking to this site to all outgoing messages

The Pro version removes the above limitations.

Upgrading preserves existing accounts, settings, and messages.

Kindest regards
Mikeone
