Some messages from gmail folder not seen
« on: January 30, 2015, 02:34:36 am »
I have some messages from a folder at gmail that are not shown in Aquamail, while both at the web interface and my desktop client are shown.
What could it be?

Tried that but didn't work. There are also a couple of recent messages. Not the newest but there only a couple of other newer ones.

No, they aren't shown either. What I found is that they are all messages that were sent by me to other people and I archive them into different folders. Meaning I'm the sender.
Quite weird that this happens only on Aquamail. Should try the GMail client but I suppose it will work.

No,  I mean storing the message I sent (originally stored on sent folder) in another folder.

I used an IMAP client (Postbox).

Tried the unhide but didn't do anything. I thought it was for POP3 accounts that.

Gmail client worked as expected and the messages are shown on the folder I moved them to.

Yes, a lot of messages. Just not the ones I'm the sender.

I tried changing the to unread and refreshed the AquaMail client but still they don't show.

Comparing to Gmail's own app isn't very useful, it's not IMAP based.

K9, Kaiten, or some other IMAP based app would be more relevant.

Let's see if the server returns them at all.

Long press the account -> Diag: message dates -> select the relevant folder, run the test, send me the log file.

And let me know the exact (as exact as possible) date/time for a few of these messages. Use "Show original" in Gmail / web to view the "Date:" header.

Oh, and one more thing: before you move those messages, and they're in Sent yet, do they show in Aqua, in the Sent folder?

Paris Geek, I gave more time between the tests this time and what I saw with the missing messages is that they show as unread on the folder header counter, but are not anywhere seen when you open the folder.

I already tried to up the sync amount (as well as the cached setting). Jaja... I didn't know you could sync by date. When I went to the setting I saw less or more messages but not other criteria because the headers of the options are outside the view in my phone. I did the change and they started to show but the problem is that 120 days won't do. I have messages from many years ago I like to have on the phone.

It should be a bug with Gmail because when trying multiple clients I saw also mixed results. Kaiten and myMail didn't show the messages as with AquaMail. MailDroid showed them but I can't find how to sort the results on this client. The messages that didn't show

What I realized while testing other products is how good and polished AquaMail is. Damn! I already forgot we have the best client for Android here.

Kostya, I got the log but didn't know what to look for. I don't seem to see the date of those messages on it at least.
As I changed labels of the three messages I didn't saw before and change it back again and they started to show I looked for others and these are the date headers I found:

Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2014 21:01:12 -0300
Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2014 22:01:05 -0300

As far as I remember they showed in AquaMail in the sent folder before I changed the label.

This is quite strange. Now I feel like Kostya... cursing Google for their faulty mail implementation. :P

Yes,  absolutely also my experience by trying out lots of other mail clients during the past weeks/months.

Great job from Kostya even as a sole developer of AquaMail :)

Gmail says 426 but AquaMail shows 515 for the folder where I store messages. I believe because of conversations on Gmail Web interface. Source folder had only a few (less than 20).

They are from 10 days ago and I already checked the headers from Web interface. They are OK. Both date and receive headers have almost the same time. Just that one is on UTC-3 and others on UTC-8.

No, the account is English and always was (since created).

I'm considering moving my mail to another provider. I will use Gmail as an account for receiving messages only then. But I still wonder why some clients work well and others don't.

Many thanks for the time you're spending on this! That is another wonderful thing of AquaMail, the community. I used many other communities from other apps and none has the involvement of users of this one. :-)

Yes.

Now, as far as your log goes -- since your folder only has 515, you can set "messages to sync" to 1000 (by number, not date) and see what happens.

And if it helps, then the underlying issue is that messages are out of order on the server.

This is *probably* not GMail specific, although their "labels" probably don't help -- but is IMAP specific.

On the other hand, when you move messages -- even old ones -- between folders, they should be assigned spots *at the very top* of the destination folder's message list (as if they were the newest ones) -- so should load.

To summarize, I can't say that I have a full understanding of the situation (and "message date" debug log only has 250 messages).

Kostya,

Yes, that's the first thing I did (setting the messages to sync to 1000) but they didn't appear after many forced syncs.

To summarize:

1. I had some messages I sent to some people (a couple from January and some more from last December).
2. They were initially stored at Sent items.
3. I then moved them to another folder (a label on Gmail) through my Postbox desktop client where I store both received and sent messages.
4. A couple of days later I wanted to check those messages while on the road with AquaMail and I couldn't find them.
5. There were just three messages more recent than those on that folder so it was easy to confirm they weren't there.
6. When again at home I checked that the messages were both at Gmail web and Postbox desktop client.

That's basically the issue. Why it happens... don't ask me. :P
I just copied all folders to another IMAP account on another provider I have and it works as expected. In my opinion something wrong should be happening with Gmail IMAP implementation that some software is handling it and some not.

I still don't see some messages (not the first two because I moved between folders and they appeared, as Paris Geek recommended).
Do you want me to delete the older 300 ones so I keep 215 only and see what happens?

Paris Geek,

Yes, I had sync at 250 before and when I saw those messages missing I changed it to 1000 (and cached to 10000). Anyway, after many sync tries they didn't appear. I even removed the folder and added it again but didn't work.

I do see the usefulness of this scenario to see if the logic can be improved in AquaMail. I only want the best for it (I know it's a lot of work and you should take it easy Kostya).

It seems I'm magnet for weird issues. :-(

Setting the "messages to sync" to 1000 should have fixed it, so it's also quite strange that it hasn't.

Yes, I'm also for everything good and against everything bad, but.. this one is kind of difficult to diagnose, even with logging.

Now if you can go back to the "message date test" log and find some of those messages there -- by date/time -- and then write down their N and UID values, and then create a "regular" AquaMail log, capturing your checking mail in Sent (with "messages to sync" at 1000), then maybe I'll be able to work something out.

I checked for all the messages I couldn't see (recent ones from the last couple of months) and I couldn't find any in the logs.
I tried removing 400 messages (before January 2014) and after a new sync now all missing messages appear.

In any case, I'm moving out my message storage from Gmail until they provide a better (and more standard) IMAP service. I will still use the account to get messages and send.

Take in account that what AquaMail failed (retrieving those messages) Kaiten and myMail also did. Only MailDroid and my desktop software worked.
