Message Deleted From Server???
« on: January 07, 2015, 04:53:43 pm »
I saw a similar post, but it was a different issue.

I have an account configured as POP3.  Deleting messages is set to Move to Deleted Folder first.  I never delete from Aqua Mail anyway.  And I pull messages from the server into Outlook, and then delete from the server then.

For one message yesterday morning and another yesterday evening, I received them in Aqua Mail, read them there, but they appear to have disappeared from the server.  They never made it to Outlook.  I read other messages in Aqua Mail, and they made it fine to Outlook, but these two disappeared.  If I hadn't read them on my phone, I wouldn't know they were missing from Outlook.

Any thoughts?

Barry

Interesting.  I had checked webmail before posting this, nothing there.  Searched my inbox on Outlook to see if they were somehow misfiled.  Didn't go to Spam, not mis-sequenced in the inbox, nothing like that.  Nothing has changed on my Outlook settings.

I'll keep watching to see if it happens again.  It's just weird.

They are both still in the inbox.  Nothing in common that I can see.  One was a short message to me, the other was a reply on top of reply on top of reply.

It could be that outlook is configured to delete message from server after some time in the interim period,  or check spam folder both in outlook and Web mail interface  or to any other folders if the rules are created in outlook app.  These are few issues,  which may make mail disappear in general.

Aqua never deletes old messages from the server just because it wants to, and never deletes messages from the server just after checking mail.

Also specifically about Hotmail and POP3: they have a server side feature where "permanently deleting" a message via POP3 will be reported to a mail app as such, but the message will actually be moved into a special folder in web mail, usually called POP3<some numbers here>.

I've seen similar results with my POP3 account sometimes. My PC is the only device which is set to delete POP3 emails from the server (after 60 days), and my phone/tablet/laptop just read them.

Yet sometimes if I try to display an older message in AquaMail that I have not fully read before (maybe two weeks old for example) I see the "not available on server" message. I didn't really worry about it much as it's all on my PC anyway, but it did seem a bit odd. Next time it happens I'll check via webmail to see if it really is still on the server as it should be.

[Edit] Ah, yes it does still happen. I checked a 12 Dec email which had only been partially loaded previously, and AquaMail now reports that it is missing from the server although webmail still displays it fine. I'll email a logfile of the below events to Kostya.

Responding to Andrew's case (message still there on the server, and "missing on the server" error when trying to open, or delete):

Please long press the account -> options and folders -> POP3 options.

Change "Message locate limit" to the max value.

I'll explain too:

POP3 does not have a way to address a particular message by any sort of a persistent unique identifier -- only by position. And the position can (and does) change when you delete messages via other apps or receive new messages.

When Aqua has to locate a particular message on the server (when loading to completion, or deleting) -- it does this by starting at the message's last known position, and if there is no match, it "looks around" up to a limited number of messages, trying to locate it.

The setting is how many messages up and down the server message list are checked when doing the above (locating a message that shifted its position).

It has no effect on data or storage usage during mail sync or on the device (like "messages to sync" and "messages to keep").
