Stop Aquamail from downloading old messages over & over

I have the Aquamail Pro version and so far I love it.  One think I haven't been able to figure out though is how to stop it from downloading old messages over and over again.  I want to keep the messages on the server. 

I have two accounts set up on Aquamail and one is working perfectly fine and the other keeps downloading dozens of old messages.

I deleted the account with the problem and started fresh but it is having the same issue.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.  Thank you!

Is this account setup as POP3 or as IMAP?

Are they same old messages over and over again?

Do you use a desktop mail app to delete some (many? older? newer?) messages from the mail server?

Do you accumulate a lot (dozens or more) messages in the Deleted folder in AquaMail, without emptying it?

It would help to know if it's POP3 or IMAP.

But either way, please long press the account (in the account list, app's main window) -> "Diag: message dates" -> choose Inbox (if offered), run the test, and you'll be prompted to send me a debug log. I'm at kmansoft / gmail.
