change header source for message display time
« on: July 01, 2013, 09:20:55 pm »
Aquamail appears to use the "Date:" header in the email message as the time when displaying an email, but this header is generated by the sending email client and can be incorrect, such as if  the sender's mail client is misconfigured or the time is wrong on their computer, or it can be manipulated intentionally for malicious reasons.

When this date is incorrect, it causes the email to appear out of order and could either force it to the top of the message list if its in the future or hide it down near the bottom if the date is in the past. How can I instruct Aquamail to use the date from the received header on my mail server instead? I know that I can rely on this being an accurate timestamp of when the email was received by my server, unlike the time added by the sender.

This could be a significant issue. On my PC I use Thunderbird, and display both of these dates. I can choose to sort by either. A tiny minority of my messages from past years, though not recently,  have dates either of 1_1_1970 or some time in 2036. Respectively the earliest and latest dates *nix systems can create, i believe.
I also had to track down why I was not receiving certain business emails in a timely fashion, and in some cases up to 4 days had elapsed between ' Date: ' and ' Received '. This prompted the sender to discover a problem with his service provider.
I would not like to have a non-optional change to use the Received data, as messages can and do swap order when you change between them. Configurable would be good.
