Assume I setup a GMail IMAP account

In my remote Inbox at gmail mail server are currently 17 emails.
The same number of emails are listed in my AquaMail Inbox on my SmartPhone.
Fine so far.

Now a new msg arrives at gmail mail server (which can be seen though browser login on Windows PC).
Immediately afterwards a ping can be heard and an icon appears on my notification bar in Android

BUT: When I open AquaMail the Inbox still shows only 17 msg.

I have to manually tap on the "refresh" circle arrows to tell AquaMail to really fetch the new email from remote mail server.

Is this correct?

Are new msg detection (+notification) and real fetch to local "Inbox" independent?

Sorry for this newbie question. I am a bit confused.
I thought IMAP automatically sync local client and remote mail server.

Alternatively which could be the reason for the notification?
A remove all other email Apps from my Android.

So it could be only another built-in Android stock App/Service.
