where do downloads go?

I'm on a Nexus 5 with Lollipop.
Simple question. Probably a bit dumb, but I don't know the answer:
Where do the downloads go? I assumed they went in the Downloads folder, but I've just downloaded a lot of attachments, and the Downloads folder is empty.

Attachments are only moved into the Downloads folder when you *save* them.

Until then, they aren't -- to avoid cluttering the folder.

To save: either long press an attachment (you'll see the icon go yellow), or use the per-attachment "three dots" menu, or use "save all" below the list of attachments.
