Hello,
I recently bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Smartphone with MIUI 9.5 OS based on Android 8.1. It´s a new device running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor with Adreno 509 GPU.
So I reinstalled my payd pro Version of Aquamail and find that most of my text emails (but also text portions of HTML emails) are strangely unreadable and "text blocks" are stacked over each other making text unreadable (see attachment). As soon as I zoom in or out by finger pinch the text is readable again!
It looks like an error in the graphics driver of the Mobile or Aquamail..
Any hints?

Looks like a bug in Chrome / WebView specific to this chip / processor.
Can you please try to turn off app settings -> message view -> auto-fit? To see if it helps?
-
Hi,
Thanks for taking the time to look into my Problem. Already tried that setting, unfortunately no change.
Best regards,
K.

Can you try volume buttons up / down to adjust font size - there are five size steps total, I'm not sure which one you're using.
Maybe you can tap "up" until it stops changing and then tap "down" twice, so you end up with "average" (default) size.
If it doesn't help - please send a couple of sample messages as .eml attachments to support / aqua-mail / dot com. This can be done in Outlook for Windows, Thunderbird, etc.
Or you can get "original source code" ("original message" etc.) in your web mail. In Gmail / web it's "show original" in the menu next to the reply icon.
-
Sent an email to support / aqua-mail / dot com containing .eml email samples and further screenshots.
Thank you!
Markus

Got the samples, thanks.
Not able to reproduce - tried several phones with Android 6.0 - 7.0 - 8.0 - 8.1, perfect every time.
We have two complaints so far for Xiaomi phones and one for Huawei.
This started a couple of weeks ago - we did not have any updates around that time, but Google may have updated WebView and/or Chrome.
Clearly we're "triggering" - "something", not sure what it is yet. Going to keep an eye on it, but no thoughts on what it is yet.

And like I mentioned in the other thread, it only occurs on first load. If I "zoom in" and "zoom out" again using the volume buttons (or change to horizontal view and back) it fixes itself, so it seems like you do something different when first showing an email than when reloading it

You should try to use the latest development build 1.17.0.1194:
https://www.aqua-mail.com/forum/index.php?topic=6737.msg40545#msg40545
+ Internal changes to message view that *may* (or may not) fix "overlapping lines of text" on some Xiaomi and Huawei devices (we are not able to reproduce on our phones)
-
Wow, thanks for this. Installed on Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (SD 636) with MIUI 9.5 and no problems so far, seems like this build solves the display problems! Will watch the incoming mails the next few days to confirm.

I loaded the new build yesterday, and didn't see anything back then.
However today I was able to see one email with the same strange text formatting, but only the first time I clicked on the email.

We don't have any new info on this one.
It's mostly (by vast margin) Xiaomi devices.
It also started between our updates (between 1.15 and 1.16). Points to a Google change - maybe WebView / Chrome update?
Also we don't actually render the content - we prepare a piece of HTML code and "feed" that to WebView / Chrome inside our app, which then do the actual rendering.
I know it doesn't help least bit - would like to fix this but so far can't even reproduce on any of my phones. The QA department can't either.
-
Xaiomi Redmi 5 Plus the same problem :'(
-
Unfortunately after a few days of usage on Redmit Note 5 I must say that the development build linked above does not fix the problem, sadly.
-
Yes we got same feedback from others (seeing the issue). Yes it's sad and we still cannot reproduce and don't know what it is (except it seems limited to Xiaomi but we've known that for some time).
-
Same issue with Huawei Mate 9, EMUI Android Version 8.0.0. Aquamail Version 1.16.0-1193 (paid). Issue comes up in various plaintext and HTML Mails. In addition to zooming as described in other posts, the formatting even fixes itself after only selecting some text in the email by holding down a finger on a word.
Not a breaking bug, but annoying enough for me to register here.
-
More than that. I consider this a pretty serious issue not just annoying.
Unfortunately we're still not able to reproduce. It's random / sporadic (although so far seems to affect only Xiaomi and to a lesser extent Huawei).
Google released a new version of Chrome today (major version number is 69). Maybe it's fixed there?
We'd love to be able to submit a bug report to Google, but so far we don't have enough "hard data" for them to go on.
-
Same here.
Huawei Mate 9, AquaMail 1.16.0.-1193.
Message is corrupted exactly as screenshot on first post. Resizing (volume up/down) fixed it.
AutoFit option does not do any change with this behavior.
Chrome and all other apps are in their last version in Play Store.
If I can help somehow, let me know.

Could you post (or send to support / at / aqua-mail / dot com) a screenshot or two?
Could you also try rolling back Google Chrome updates (in Google Play app) to see if this helps?
At this point we're (still) thinking it's a bug in Chrome and we still aren't able to reproduce ourselves.
I'd love to file a bug report with Google (their Chrome team actually fixes things...) but they will need at least screenshots, and to know if rolling back updates would fix it.

Hi,
screenshots attached.
Screenshot_20180919-091840.jpg - example of corrupted email
Screenshot_20180919-091920.jpg - Google Chrome version (69.0.3947.100)
I reverted Google Chrome updates, but it didn't help
Screenshot_20180919-092017.jpg - Google Chrom version (66.0.3359.126)
When I change the font size (volume up/down), text is fixed, but when I close the message and open it again, it is corrupted again
-
Thank you for the screenshots.
I filed a bug with Google (Chrome), we'll see if anything happens there.
In the past I've found the Chrome team to be pretty responsive.

Update:
I filed a bug with Google:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=888345
This bug has been merged into this one:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=883276
And it looks like they know what it is and are in the process of fixing. Looks like they're targeting Chrome 70 (next release).
-
Excellent! Thanks for taking our concerns seriously and taking care of the problem! Kudos!
-
Well let's what actually happens.... So far I'm cautiously optimistic...
-
Hi Kostya,
it seems the bug was fixed in last (beta) release (1.17.0-1295dev). Since this release I haven't found any broken message (and even old messages, like the one in my screenshot in previous post are ok).
Thanks for everyhing you've done :)

But how is this possible if the problem is related to google chrome and not the code of the app?
-
Re: it seems the bug was fixed in last (beta) release (1.17.0-1295dev)
Glad to hear it but it's not fixed - you're just lucky.
Re: how is this possible if the problem is related to google chrome and not the code of the app
Easy :) Starting with Android 7.0 it's Chrome which renders HTML content in any app.
