Title: How to hide text of attachments?
Post by: Justin on February 16, 2018, 11:25:30 am
Hi, using last official release of AquaMail (Android 7,8).

If I receive a plain text attachment (e.g. ics-file), AquaMail shows the content of this file. But this is annoying, especially if attachments are shown above the mail body.

I just want to download/save/open the attachment.

How to hide this plain text display?

Anyone?  ;)

I can't believe it's impossible, since there is an option wether showing preview of images. Why no analogue option for plain text in attachments?

I guess, it's an 'edge case', not really needed for the average user.

@mikeone Thanks for response.

I don't know wether it's an "edge case".

It often happens that text files are sent as attachment. And text files can contain very long text.

So I don't see the requirement to display the content by default without tapping it.

Oh, now I see:

Even if the option "Attachment above the message" is disabled, nevertheless the plain text (e.g. of an ics-file) is shown above the text body. Other attachments like .jpg, .pdf,... are correctly shown below the message body.

That's really weird.

Update:
I can't reproduce this behavior right now... 🤔

Not every ics-file is an invitation. It could be just a calendar file with one, two or dozens of events.

And there are many calendar apps in Android to handle that (e.g. importing).

What is weird?
It's necessary to show the invitation above all other items,because sometimes the answer should be done in the invitation itself (I've tested those awkward behaviors of calendar invitations during weeks long ago...)
Or is it something else?
Thanks
It's just that I don't want to see the content of an attachment above the message text, if the option "Attachment above the message" is disabled,

However, I'm not able to reproduce this behavior currently ...

Calendar attachments - with previews - are pulled "up" and above message text. Regardless of other settings.

Calendar invites are just "special", and there was strong user feedback (this is from about 2014 or so, mind you) that calendar invites should be "very very visible".

@Kostya Searched the english part of the forum for "invitations", can not find this strong feedback. Do you mean this one?
https://www.aqua-mail.com/forum/index.php?topic=3482.0

An option to disable the preview (like for images) would be nice.

I understand. So, for "ics files" - with "Image previews" enabled in the settings - it's working as intended :)

Nevertheless, 'normal' text files should not be displayed as preview, as suggested and comprehensible explained by @Justin.

In addition: ics-files can be long plain text files, containing several events.

Hi, normal text files are not displayed as preview. I send / receive many .txt .ini .html files (plain text) that are processed like any other attachment.

Would you please send screenshots, since I may have misunderstood the point. Please use "rich text" and "plain text" options while sending (if you're the sender). This could narrow the issue.

Thanks
Hi @Paris Geek,

I *think* he's only seen this with .ics calendar attachments, and *extrapolated* it to "all plain text attachments".

I *know* that there are no previews for "text files".

But then - what do I know? - so if I'm mistaken please tell me.

@Kostya I interpreted long ics-files as plain text files and generalized. Sorry, my bad.

@Justin

Oh I remember now, "extrapolated" sounds too "dry" and "mathematical" in English although that's how we usually say it in Russian.

"Generalized" or "over-generalized" is better.

Thanks for refreshing my memory :)

... Well, and I stepped (blind) into it, since @Justins explanation sounded plausible. 8)  Sorry, Kostya.

Hi, to make it clear:

This is a screenshot, how the preview (im fact just a part of a preview) of only one event looks alike in AquaMail on Samsung S8. I can not read the preview.

So I would like to hide the preview, would be more clear in view btw.

@Paris Geek Sorry, misunderstanding

 I don't want to hide the attachment, I just want to hide the useless preview for events in ics-files.
