Title: Phantom email count (revisited)
Post by: fjh-globalconsult on March 19, 2017, 03:18:26 pm
Morning all,

googling revealed this has happened before, hence the "revisited"...  :)

As you can see from the attached, we show a mailcount of 4 in Inbox where there is nothing.

We run our own POP-3 mailservices and the mailbox size at this point is zero. So there really is nothing.

Rebooting the device didn't help.

It worked on this device (Honor 8 with Android 7.0 (stock)) perfectly until only recently (no updates in the mean time) .

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards
Frank

Thanks for your reply. Please re-read:

"We run our own POP-3 mailservices and the mailbox size at this point is zero. So there really is nothing."

So no Hotmail or other crap.

This is one of our corporate POP-3 servers. The file in /var/spool/mail is empty.

All of the accounts in the screenshot are configured identically as to server name, pop-3, port etc. Just obviously different accountnames/passwords.

All of these accounts have not been altered over the past weeks and worked flawlessly until some days ago, when the two accounts showed the "phantom message numbers".

I haven't used POP3 with Aquamail myself, - so, I am guessing here:
I see that the number of messages in Inbox is exactly the same as in Deleted (4 and 4 for one account, 1 and 1 , for another).  Since POP3 accounts do not have a concept of "Deleted" folder (or mail), - when you have "delete" configured in Aquamail as "move to deleted", it does so within the app, but doesn't delete the message until you expunge the message from Deleted. So, while Aquamail shows no messages in Inbox, it still reports the number of messages on the server.
You can test that hypothesis easily: just go to the "Deleted" account and empty it (there is a command for that there), and see if the message count for "Inbox" changes.

I see yet another account where you have 0 in Inbox, and several messages in Deleted. I am not sure if that is also a POP3 account, or an IMAP account, where it would work differently. Also, those messages could have been deleted from Sent.

Can you please try long pressing the Deleted folder and "delete all"?

And then refresh the account?

If the issue doesn't go away, would you mind removing and re-creating the account? This is quite easy if you use the app's "backup and restore" feature, in the menu on the main screen (you will want to make backup prior to deleting the account from the app).

Good morning,

today -without me doing anything different than every day- the app decided to show the messages in question in the inbox in a "greyed out" state. I could select them and deleted them successfully to the "Deleted" folder from where I could finally remove them.

Since I didn't do anything but opening the app, I have no clue as to what happened. But it's gone now....

Thanks to all who replied and helped.
