When I go into an Inbox then left of each item a colored Avatar/icon letter circle is shown.
The letter corresponds to the initial letter of the sender.
How can I always hide this colored cicles?
I prefer to have a longer visual subject line

It's the 7th item on the FAQ page:
"Senders' images and color chips (colored letters) in message lists"
http://www.aqua-mail.com/?page_id=227

My color chips show up in my emails after I open them. They used to show up in the list of unread emails but they vanished a few days ago. All my settings are unchanged and, based on what I've read in the Faq, the settings should be correct for what I want to display. Thoughts?

Well, for me this feature is working as expected:
• screenshot #1 - my settings
• screenshot #2 - contact image(s) in Message list
• screenshot #3 - contact image in Message view
• screenshot #4 - colour chips in Message list
• screenshot #5 - colour chip in Message view
Therefore I have no idea what could be mixed up in your settings...!?
Screenshots from your side (Settings, Message list / Message view) could be helpful.

Meanwhile I'm busy working to make it even more confusing...
Coming soon -- "replace sender names with those found in Contacts" for message list (and maybe other places).
Yes, "just like in K9 Mail", there are enough people asking about it...

I hope that will be optional. Right?
I don't want my correspondets to know how they are saved in my "contacts" (Silly John, Mad Matilda, Ugly Guy, and That Idiot Who Doesn't Know A Thing) ;)

@ Str, you gave me excellent idea to give special name to some "contacts", any more suggestions would be very much welcome

Re: I hope that will be optional. Right?
Yes, off by default, and for display purposes only.
Re: I don't want my correspondets to know how they are saved
This new thing is *not* for the compose screen, it's for everything else.
On the compose screen, a similar setting existed for a long time, and it always defaulted to "false" (app settings -> contacts -> the "composing and sending" section).
( BTW, Gmail app will happily replace "William H. Lawson IV, Esq." with "Mr Dickhead" when replying, if that's the name in Contacts... )
Re: Silly John, Mad Matilda, Ugly Guy, and That Idiot Who Doesn't Know A Thing
That last one is for me I'm sure :)
Just posted in fact, -dev4.3, not in Play yet, let's give it a bit of time.

Can someone please step by step tell me how to to find the message list I'm trying to shut off the round circles, however I cannot find where the message list is located under options.
Thank you

Message list is what you get when you touch the specific folder in an account, and see the list of messages. Nothing more than that.

App settings -> has a list of sections, one of them is "message list".
To get to app settings, please:
Go to the app's main screen (where it has Smart Folder near the top, then the list of your accounts and their folders, expandable, below the accounts). This is how it normally starts up from the home screen icon.
If your phone has a Menu button, tap that, select Settings. If it doesn't, there will be a "three dots" icon top right, tap that, choose Settings.
