I get a error message a few times a day that says sync error.
This is a imap account and comes to my laptop fine.
Is this a problem or setting on my pad, with my isp?

There could be a multitude of reasons. The most likely one is that your connectivity is bad at the moment when the app is trying to sync. If subsequently, when you have a good connection (e.g. you are on Wi-Fi), the app syncs successfully, that a good indication for the prior bad connectivity.
If it is a Gmail account, and it happens when you are on a mobile network or on a Wi-Fi that is now your own, it could be due to Gmail not happy about wrong geolocation (in which case you should get a message in your account informing you about a login attempt from a suspicious location).
If you want to investigate this further, here are some suggestions:
Is this happening with just one account or with all of them (if you have more than one)?
If you notice the sync error just occurred, notice what is the state of the phone: is it on a mobile network? what is the strength? If it is on Wi-Fi, what is the strength of the Wi-Fi signal (e.g. you are on the opposite end of your house from the modem and the signal is weak). Try synching it manually (open the app and press on the "wheel", or pull down in the message view of an account that has a problem.
Look if any actual error message ("toast") shows up. What does it say?
And, BTW, - you may want to share what your ISP is, - as some of them have (known) problems time to time...

Other than StR's excellent and detailed, but very general response -- sorry I can't provide anything more focused, because:
Your message says nothing about the actual error message.
And "IMAP account" doesn't tell me much either, most mail services these days support IMAP.
Feel free to capture the issue in the app's debug log (please see my signature just below).

Hello everyone.
Thanks for your help but currently is still having the same error sync problem.
I have it about 3 ft. from the wifi router.
It is on a rogers network.
When it works it may work for a hour or so, when it doesn't it may not work for a hour or so.
And yes it happens on two accounts not any gmail addresses.
If you need any technical info tell me what would help and I will get it.
