I have several imap accounts.
In the smart folder if I select 3-4 messages there is a folder icon at the bottom I can use to move them to the spam folder.
But, if I select more than 4 messages, the folder icon changes to an explanation icon.
1. Why is that?
2. What does clicking on the explanation icon do?
3. How can I move a dozen selected messages in one go to the spam/junk folder?

1. Why is that?
I am not using SmartFolder, but I suspect it might be because those messages belong to different accounts. Aquamail cannot move messages across accounts.
Why don't you click on the explanation icon? The app author must have put it there for a reason. Don't you think?
2. What does clicking on the explanation icon do?
Explains?
3. How can I move a dozen selected messages in one go to the spam/junk folder?
If they are all from the same account, - you can choose them at once and do that.
At least, - that works for me in a regular folder.

@StR
Yes, you nailed it exactly :)

2. What does clicking on the explanation icon do?
This is a "square icon". Long press on it will show an explanation bubble: "Select all". This description should be self-explanatory 8)

Exactly correct! :)

It's exclamation, not explanation. Sorry. Spellchecker error.
I did and the selected messages disappeared without an explanation. Not knowing what happened to them I was hesitant to click it again until I knew what it did. Your suggestion about #1 is correct so I am now assuming the exclamation icon is a warning that there is a problem selecting these messages.

My error, or rather the spellchecker got in the way. It's exclamation, not explanation.
I know about the square select all icon. This is a different one with an exclamation. Anyway all resolved now.

No problem. However, I can't reproduce your issue.
A screenshot could be of help.

No need to.
Problem is solved.
The exclamation icon was Aquamail's way of saying there was a problem. That icon appears when I select messages from more than one account, replacing the folder icon used to move messages to a different folder. Now that I know, it is no longer a problem.

This icon is a kind of magic inside AquaMail.
