Please have a look into this thread:

Images from Google profile are refreshed once every 24 hours. To "force", bring up "Account setup" for an account.

Thank you. In "account switch panel" is new photo. But in message list (left mosaic photo) is show my old photo. How i refresh this?
Thank you. Tom.

Message list images are taken from your Contacts.
Google will not update your photo in your Contacts when you update your Google Profile. Please do this yourself.

Please. I still see my old avatar picture from Google account. This photo is old about three months. Can you please describe in detail the procedure to refresh this photo of the new Google Account in Message list (mosaic photo left of the message).
Thank you very match.

Hi Tom,
I can confirm. Unfortunately, I still see my old avatar picture in AquaMail (screenshot #1) which I have changed in Google four months ago (screenshot #2).

Please update the image in your Google+ profile (I believe Gmail web also has its own photo, but it's not always in sync with G+).
AquaMail fetches profile images from G+, believe that's the only supported / official API (source, function).
---
After updating your G+ profile, long press the account in Aqua -> Account setup -> Next, Save and next time you check mail in this account, Aqua will request your image from Google again.

Re: But in message list (left mosaic photo) is show my old photo
Um, sorry, missed this part the first time.
The photo in the message list comes from your phone's Contacts app.
How it gets there?
Android does it "automagically". Please check your phone's Contacts app, or better yet, search for your own email here:

@mikeone:
I never heard about "aboutme.google.com", so used this instead:
