Title: message search: what parts are searched?
Post by: StR on October 12, 2015, 05:25:37 am
Kostya, I needed to  search for some messages, and I realized that I don't know in which parts of the message Aquamail searches. Are those only  headers,  or body as well?
Which headers are searched: To:, From:, Cc: , Bcc:, Subject?

Finally, a suggestion: if it doesn't require much of work, is it possible to allow to edit the last (just) searched text? Currently,  if I need to change just one letter, I have to retype it completely.

All 5 that I've written? You didn't really mean "all",  did you?
Is Bcc included in the search?
Any other headers besides these five?

...
BCC is included in the search, if it's visible:
- when you receive a message, from X, and Y is BCC, you'll not see Y so no search is available on Y
- when you send a message to X, with Y in BCC, you'll be able to search on Y
...

That's the definition of bcc.
Thanks.

BCC is not searched currently -- should it be?

Kostya,

I don't know if Bcc should be searched or not.
I am not doing many searches in Aquamail.
I do most searches in other mail programs (Thunderbird on Windows, [al]pine on Unix). I just checked and neither of them seems to be searching in Bcc when searching for "recipients".
And I don't remember if I ever had a scenario when I needed to search in Bcc... There was one case, when was surprised why I was unable to find certain messages. I was assuming it was searching in Bcc.

So, the conclusion I make from this memory tour is that it is useful to be able to search Bcc, but not critical.
Whether it is there or not, it is always nice to know what to expect.

Kostya, - does Aquamail search in the message body - either locally or server-side?
At least from seeing how fast the server-side search happens, I am suspecting it doesn't, but I might be wrong. Also, I remember your response to some other question related to the message body that the body might not be loaded.

I just tested, and found that in both cases Aquamail searches in the body as well.
I didn't test if it loads the bodies of the messages it has locally before the local search happens.

And I just found this message of yours: http://www.aqua-mail.com/forum/index.php?topic=1433.msg4481#msg4481 (and this one: https://www.aqua-mail.com/forum/index.php?topic=238.msg790#msg790 ). The first two paragraphs in it belong to the FAQ. (I found at least two threads with the questions about search, so, that qualifies as "F"AQ.) Adding to that the body is searched would be also helpful.
