Hello,
I use Aquamail Pro and I have the following and annoying problem:
very frequently I have new messages, that I did not open, but they are already marked as read.
I have just activated the debug-mode and am waiting that the issue is replicated again.
I use Android Lollipop 5.0.2. Latest AquaMail Pro.
The account with this problem is @yahoo.fr with an IMAP setting.
I searched the forum, found at least one other thread about this problem, so as indicated somewhere, I tried to set "Mark message as read" to "Never automatically", but it did nothing.
Would you have any input to correct this ?
Thank you in advance.
Nicolas

It could have been a good reason indeed, but no : other mail app are de-activated and, anyway, I never set up any account with them...
Thanks anyway for your answer ! :)

This is a known issue with Yahoo. I've seen it before, including debug logs.
IIRC (it's been a while, not a frequent issue), the messages even looked unread in web mail, but were reported as read ("\Seen" as its' called) by Yahoo's mail server when using IMAP (that is, connecting as a third party app).
-
Thank you for your answer.
I saw it just when I managed to reproduced this bug with debug log enabled... but it seems that debug log is useless in the end... :(
The problem is that this issue happens daily for me... and I missed some important mails because of this. I think I never had this this issue with other mail app before (I mainly use the stock app on Samsung phones), with the very same mail account @Yahoo.
The strange thing is that this issue happens in the following manner (I did some more investigation since my first post) :
- checking mails -> new mails are present -> they are downloaded and are correctly marked as UNREAD.
Then, some minutes or hours later:
- new mail check -> new mails are present -> they are downloaded but the previous unread mails are then marked as READ.
So, at a point, the mails were correctly seen as UNREAD by AquaMail.
The other problem is that, when I only use my web browser to read my mail (phone is off), I never had this issue. When my phone (and so AquaMail) is on, the new mails are marked READ in AquaMail and also on my web browser. (you already said that).
Last : when I manually mark a message as UNREAD, it seems to be protected against this issue*.
Would you like me to send you my debug log anyway ?
Thanks again,
Nicolas
* would it be a way to find a work-around, by allowing AquaMail to automatically mark a new unread mail as READ then UNREAD (it may "force" this state for the new messages) ?
-
Ah, so you see the messages getting received as UNREAD and then they turn to READ on next sync?
Sorry if I already mentioned it, but it really looks like another mail app accessing the account, using POP3.
And since you mentioned "stock mail app", are you sure it's not still configured with the account and active?
-
Unfortunately, I'm sure that only AquaMail was set up with this account. The stock app has never been configured since my phone first use*, neither Gmail app.
I usually use a firefox plugin (X-notifier) to connect to my webmail interface, but for about 2 weeks, I disabled it, in order to troubleshoot the "AquaMail issue" - but the problem was still here...
* today, I set up and used the stock mail app (and I delete my mail accounts in AquaMail...) in order to see if the bug is also present with another app. So far, there's no problem with stock app !
-
Well, if you ever would like to investigate it some more in AquaMail --
-- please capture the issue in the app's debug log.
I have instructions linked below in my signature.
Just enable the log (with "raw session data" enabled) and use the app as you normally would. Wait for the issue to occur (the messages changing from unread to read) and send me the log file.
-
Yep, I will. As soon as I "catch" the bug, I send you the log.
If I find another cause, I will report as well.
Thanks for the help.

*BUMP*
Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I'm having the SAME issue (NOT Pro version). Android 5.0.1, Samsung Galaxy S4. I get messages in (MAPI) and they immediately change to having been READ though I have not yet viewed them. Sometimes 1 or 2 may stay as UNREAD. These could even be in other folders. In one such folder, there was an UNREAD message. Opening that message would NOT change its status. It stayed UNREAD. I had to open and use a menu command to change it to having been READ. I'm stumped and frustrated. I like the program so far (only been using it for 2 or 3 weeks), but I can't live with this unknown. I have to go through all messages in case I missed any.
Was any solution found? I didn't see it in this thread unless there's another thread I did not yet find.

Did you send me a few email messages about this recently? With "message date" debug logs?
No Aqua Mail bug here.
The logs show that the messages are reported "unread" first, and then as "read", so their state is updated in Aqua Mail.
Either another mail app (Outlook for Windows, that sort of thing, set up to use POP3 not IMAP) or a server bug (these happen too).
-
hey everyone.
I have the same issue.
I have a few emails on my Aqua Mail Pro.
When I read emails from a server, the messages are being read even though I have not ever read them.
Could it be that "someone else" is actually opening the messages and it is synced with my account?
How can I set this account to have its own read/unread messages?
Thanks
-
When I read emails from a server, the messages are being read even though I have not ever read them.
Sorry did you mean "when I receive"?
Most common cause - mixing POP3 and IMAP (IMAP in Aqua, POP3 somewhere else). The FAQ has more details.
-
Yes sorry that's what I meant.
What can I do now to fix that?
I want to have a seperate log for the messages I read from Aqua Mail.
-
Separate from what?
-
Ok POP3 does not have the technical capability to sync read/unread state either way (mail app to server / server to mail app). Each mail app then tracks read/unread state separately.
So what you can do is:
- Remove the account from Aqua Mail
- Add it back as Internet Mail, making sure to tap Manual after entering your email and password and changing IMAP to POP3 on the next screen (near the top)
- With POP3, you will lose access to server folders (including sent), push mail, sent message uploading
- Marking messages as read / unread in Aqua Mail will *not* sync to server anymore
- Marking messages as read / unread in web mail will *not* sync to Aqua Mail anymore
However:
- Most if not all mail services will mark as read in web mail any messages *retrieved* using POP3 (not even marked as read, just retrieved).
- Some do this when a message is fetched "to completion", some when a message is fetched even partially (as Aqua does when it checks mail)
- Some have a setting in web mail to turn this off, some don't.
-
I also have this problem and I have not been able to figure out why. New emails get marked as "read" after 5 minutes or so.

I just responded to your post in the other section.
