The options to change the background color for read and unread messages in the message list view are swapped.
Changing the background color for read effects unread and vise versa.

There is a setting on that screen to switch around the read/unread (for people who don't need / want the deeper color customization).
Above/before the detailed color settings.

If you want to use different background colors for read/unread messages make sure that the option "Switched backgrounds" is disabled!
Beforehand you have to enable the option "Use backgrounds".

The "switch read/unread" being enabled does not prevent customization, but the backgrounds will be switcher, as per the setting...
However, I made a change today to switch the titles of those two color settings when the "switch read/unread" is enabled, to avoid confusion.

Thanks Kostya, the modified "logic" to set the background colors is really useful. :)
