Title: Yahoo Mail just stopped sending emails??
Post by: all_bran on February 17, 2015, 05:18:23 pm
I have 2 different Android Devices, a Galaxy S3 and a Nexus 6.  Yahoo Mail works fine on the GS3.  And also works fine in the GMail App on the Nexus 6.   AquaMail can receive Yahoo emails on the Nexus 6 but can't send for some reason.  I double checked all the server settings and made them the same as the GMail app and still no dice.   I tried with WiFi on and WiFi off.  Still no dice.  Is this a known issue?

It "Checks" the incoming server and appears fine.  But when it tries to "Check" the outgoing mail server SMTP, it says:

Account check error
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): Network error.
Please make sure the data is correct.

I downloadd and installed AVG Anti Virus, does that inhibit mail server traffic or something?

I would suspect that yes, AVG antivirus can affect your e-mail.
Check, e.g. this FAQ from AVG: http://www.avg.com/us-en/faq.num-4450

Very strange.  Emails mostly don't sent right away when I click Send... that's when I get the error message.  But when I check my phone 2 hours later, the email was sent (at some point in the last 2 hours).  So I guess they're going, they're just really really slow?  A slow connection with the server that causes it to timeout sometimes but work other times?  I would think if AVG was the problem, it would block it 100% of the time?

That article is for a PC based AVG Email Scanner.  I am using the Android 5.0 operating system on my phablet.

The behavior you describe would mean that there is a problem with the initial connection to the SMTP (outgoing mail) server, but then, on a subsequent connection it works. It is very much possible that AVG is at fault here. If before the installation of AVG, Aquamail wasn't behaving like this, that gives even more weight to that guess.

If it is known to create problems on one OS, it is logical to assume it may create similar problems on a different OS. So, I would recommend disabling AVG and checking if the behavior changes. I cannot tell you with the 100% confidence that it is AVG's fault, but it is very likely, and it is easy to test (assuming that you are looking for a solution) as a first step.

I applaud Yahoo's continuing efforts to break their mail service, what is it, third time in two months? :)

1 - You could try changing the server from smtp.mail.yahoo.com to android.smtp.mail.yahoo.com

To do this, long press the account -> account setup -> Manual -> Next

2 - A debug log showing the error would be nice. I'd then be able to see where this mysterious "CLOSE" comes from.

Please see the link in my signature (how to create debug logs).
