Title: Change swipe for next message

In Smart View on my Galaxy 3 if I am viewing the first message I have to swipe from left to right to see the next message. On my Sony Experia 3 Compact I have to swipe from right to left. Is there a setting somewhere that controls which side to swipe from please?

Yes. My personal preference is "like a book": older -> current -> newer if you go left to right. But that's "not like in app other apps", so it's not the default.

Please see Aqua settings -> look and feel -> "Previous message is Older".
