Title: No spell checking with Android Kitkst?
Post by: Tetta on September 19, 2014, 07:57:20 pm
Hi everybody,

I'm using AquaMail on a Samsung TabPro with Android 4.4.2 (Kitkat). Whatever I try and whatever keyboard I use: I cannot activate the spell checker, although spell checking works with other apps.

Using AquaMail on a Lenova tablet and Android 4.2.2 with the same keyboard spell checking works flawlessly.

Does anybody have a clue how I can activate the spell checker? Thanks a lot in advance.

Well, I don't happen to own this particular device, but here is my two cents:

Android has a system-provided spell checker since 4.0. You can enable it in system settings under Language and Input (a screenshot from a Nexus 5 attached).

However: it seems that Samsung removes this particular feature from their flavor of Android (system firmware), for reasons unknown to me.

On keyboard "spell check" -- autocorrect, really, since it checks as you type, not all text...

Not seeing any issues with SwiftKey, which is my preferred keyboard, on any of my devices.

On a Samsung S4 Mini, which also has Android 4.2, I had to enable "Predictive text" in Samsung keyboard's settings, then I got auto-correct and auto-complete in Aqua and in other apps. Screenshot attached -- note now it's trying to auto-correct "Tja" to "The".

So perhaps you could elaborate on what exact soft keyboards you've tried. Samsung? SwiftKey? Swype?

Hello Kostya,

thanks a lot for your help. What I should have mentioned right from the start: My mothertongue is German, which makes things more complicated, I guess.

But first of all: With the Swift-keyboard spell checking workes perfecly. Most suprising: After trying the Swift-k/b, my Samsung-k/b all of a sudden did the job, too - I had tried it  several times before, but it definitely did not work this way then - very strange...

But still spell checking does not work with my Hacker's Keyboard (but it does with Android 4.2!) which is aparently the only one that supports typing German perfeclly, because it shows the layout of a normal German PC-keyboard, having separate keys for the 'umlaute' and most of all a feature that I haven't seen yet with any other k/b: It can be set to a mode that long-pressing shows the respective capital letter in the pop-up - since German orthography demands all nouns to start with a capital letter, we permanently needc capital letters, so this feature speeds up typing a lot.

Today I tried every k/b that might apply: Spell checking worked with some (not all) of them, but none of them is as convenient and flexibel as Hacker's Keyboard, which even comes with own dictionaries, so it's clear that it is meant to support spell checking... But since I cannot find a solution, I will simply have to decide: Spell-checking or convenience...

Anyway: Thanks again very much  for your support.

Regards,

Tetta

Ok. If you're only seeing the issue (spell check, auto correct) not working with Hacker's keyboard, perhaps you could report it to Hacker's keyboard developers?
