Why does refreshing mails get gradually slower as time passes?
Like, I wake up in the morning, do a refresh and it might take even 15 to 20 seconds, if I refresh within few minutes it takes less than a second.
This makes the app become linearly heavier on battery as time goes on.
(I'm on a Gmail account with push on one folder and no polls if that matters)

Sounds like the first time you refresh the app does not have a connection to the server(s) yet...
Already established network connections are cached (esp. for IMAP), this explains why the second refresh is faster.
