I still don't see any contacts in Aquamail. Did what you suggested:
Not sure if IMAP in general or Hotmail's IMAP in particular, provides access to server contacts.
You may want to export them in Outlook (Hotmail), and import into your Gmail account (you don't have to use GMail for mail, the idea is to get those contacts to sync to the device, so AquaMail can access them):

Maybe I misunderstood. Do I have to add the gmail account also to aquamail in order to get the contacts?

Pretty much any Android device has a @gmail.com account in its system settings (for Google Play, G+, etc, etc).
If you import your contacts into this account in Gmail/web, the system will sync them to the device. You don't have to add this account in AquaMail.

Kostya, I must be dense but so far no luck. I have a regular gmail account I seldom use. I exported my contacts from Hotmail to a CSV file and imported them in the gmail account. That by itself didn't accomplish anything. I opened up aquamail, went to the contact picker I only saw one contacts which I had entered manually under the aqua group. There was also a skype group and there were some contacts there but the hotmail contacts were nowhere to be found. I added the gmail account to aquamail, still nothing.
I have jellybean 4.2.2 on a tablet. And I just discovered now that only 1/3 of my folders ine aquamail are showing. I quess the best thing to do here is uninstall everything and try again at some later time. Too bad.I like the app.

Uninstalled, reinstalled aquamail. Things start looking up somewhat. Still no contacts when sending a message however when I receive a message and reply I'm prompted if I want to save the sender. If I say yes I do see all my contacts. Very confused, but at least I know they are there, somewhere.
