Title: Can't add an account using SSL (strict check)
Post by: aarong on December 21, 2012, 08:12:41 am
Hi,

I'm trying to set up an account using the SSL (strict check) Security Type and keep getting the following errors:

Incoming mail server (IMAP): Network error.
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): Network error.

The domain is hosted by DreamHost and I set the server port recommended by DreamHost. I'm able to set this up using the stock app on my phone but really want to try out AquaMail. As a side note, if I choose SSL (accept any), I'm able to set it up.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Usually if you cannot add an account with an SSL strict check, this means the SSL certificate may be self-signed.  Some mail clients give you no option to select strict versus not strict so this may be the reason it works with the other client.

I'm intimately familiar with the above as I recently set up a mail server for our non-profit group.  I had to go and get a free, valid SSL certificate.  The self-signed certificate was causing Outlook 2007 to always confirm its use on start-up.  :\

Cheers,

Thank you Pablo. Yes, lots of mail servers, even those run by large companies, use SSL certificates that require "accept any".

In part, this is because the set of root certificates accepted by Android varies by its version, and possibly even by the manufacturer.

Hi!

A great application!

My ESP just made some major changes, including getting new certificates.  Before, strict SSL worked fine.  Now I get the network errors above even with "accept any".  The stock android mail client adapted fine, and AM connects fine with no encryption.

What should I do?

Thanks.
C.

Edit : Sorry, it's working perfectly now with "accept any".  I don't know what happened before, but it doesn't matter now.

Thanks.
C.

Cassandra -- can't comment on the stock app, but in general, whether a certificate is accepted or not depends on whether the certificate's root (which makes the device trust the certificate) is pre-installed on your specific device and Android version.
