Title: disable notification bar notifications

Can I disable notifications which appears in the notification bar when new mail arrives but leave led notifications on?

That's not possible.

In Android, flashing the LEDs is an optional part of status bar notifications. Notification icon and text are required.

You might want to consider using Light Flow (look for it on Google Play), it can take care of the LEDs and then you could turn off incoming message notifications in my app.

Is there a way to turn off the words that show up next to the icon in the status bar?  I have "Protect privacy" selected but it still displays that I have one unread message in my inbox.

Ideally, I would hear the notification and see the flashing LED but not see any notification in the status bar.  Is there still no way to change this?

TIA

As I said, flashing the LED is tied to posting a status bar notification.

You may want to consider one of the third party notification enhancement apps that work with Aqua. I have a list on the main page of this site. I'd look at LightFlow first.
