A user defined spam filter would really distinguish this app from gmail. Surely this wouldn't be so hard?

I agree (though I don't think it would be that easy to do). The new contact icon display goes a long way towards helping me "filter" my mail quickly, as I can just scan the emails and easily pick out the ones from people in my Contacts.

It would be great if you could at least have an option to start for "Filter by Address book", and only place messages in InBox from known contacts. Any chance of getting this feature in?

If you're accessing your email using IMAP, wouldn't it just be easier to use the spam filter from your server, if it has one that is? I have three email accounts Google, Yahoo, and Outlook and just use their spam filters and see very few spam messages in any of my inboxes. Of course I sync the spam folders as well so I can check them for any messages placed in there by mistake.

many of us prefer pop3 on our Android devices.
